More than just real estate

Ways to use Pinterest when buying or selling a home

Unless you’ve been holed up in a cave for the past few months, you’ve probably been hearing a lot about Pinterest lately. The online bulletin-board is the fastest-growing social networking site on the Internet and its legions of users are passionate, loyal and – as many of them will tell you themselves – downright obsessed with “pinning.”

If you don’t know much about Pinterest, read more about the popular site here. If you’re already familiar with Pinterest (or one of the obsessed), you may think it’s just a space for collecting pictures for craft inspiration, decadent recipes or for planning your (imaginary or actual) wedding. But the opportunity to use Pinterest whether you’re buying or selling your home is out there. You just have to know how to use it.

FOR BUYERS

  • Search in Pinterest’s “Home” category and you’ll have thousands of photos to sort through for inspiration. What are you looking for in your new home? Pin room shapes, layouts, kitchen design, landscaping, etc. that interest you, then take a step back and look at your entire “New Home Inspiration” board. When you’re out on showings, look for those features you’ve added on your pin board.
  • If you’re only thinking about buying a home and want to know what the first steps are, you can simply type “buying a home” or “first-time homebuyer” into Pinterest’s search box. From there, you should find plenty of articles and savvy tips to help you in your home-buying process. Remember to re-pin anything you find interesting or helpful so you can access the article easily in future reference.

FOR SELLERS

  • One of the most popular uses for Pinterest is for pinning exterior and interior photos of homes. If your home is on the market, “pin” your home’s best photo on Pinterest (make sure the photo links back to your home’s online property page) and make a note describing the photo, the home and mention that it’s for sale! You never know who may come across it or how quickly the pin will spread throughout the program.
  • You can also search Pinterest for tips and tricks in staging or preparing your home for a sale. Simply type the kind of information you’re looking for in the search box, and you’ll be able to re-pin any article topic from boosting curb appeal to how to effectively price your home. You can find excellent resource on Pinterest to refer to while you’re trying to sell your home.

Are you a Pinterest addict? What are your favorite things to “pin” on the site?
