When I moved from Ohio to Milwaukee’s East Side last summer, I was torn between the excitement of living in a new city and the anxiety of being so unfamiliar with my surroundings while hundreds of miles away from my family. I’d lived in Ohio since I was born – could I ever consider anyplace else home?
After living in the city of Milwaukee for five years, my friend Clair decided she wanted a fresh way of living, outside of the busy city. She uprooted from her apartment downtown and moved to greener pastures 20 minutes north, in Germantown. After her move, she confided in me that it was nice to have a big yard, but what would she do so far away from the places she’d become to acclimated to downtown?
Well, as for me, I fell hard and quick for this city. I frequented the summer festivals, got caught up in the Brewers postseason run and even found the beauty in the lengthy Milwaukee winter – I’d gained a certain pride for my new home usually reserved for lifetime residents. And Clair? She discovered it all doesn’t all happen in the city. With a newfound respect for life in the suburbs, she’s found a close-knit community with a spice all its own. As the two of us can attest, the metro Milwaukee area is an amazing place to live, no matter where you lay your ground.
